One of SPEDU’s mandate is to facilitate infrastructure development in the region to sustain business enterprises to operate efficiently. This has resulted in SPEDU being involved in some major infrastructural projects in the region among them the Platjan Bridge which connects Botswana and South Africa at Platjan Border Post, Motloutse electrification project and the refurbishment of Selebi Phikwe airport.
It is on this background that SPEDU in conjunction with other stakeholders such as Department of Roads, Government Fleet Manager, Farmers Association representatives, Palapye and Bobirwa District Commissioner, Bobirwa Council Secretary and SPEDU conducted a site visit from the 20th -23th January 2026.
The main objective of the exercise was to introduce the technical team to the project area. Furthermore the exercise appreciated resource availability (road material, water, support infrastructure, accommodation among others).
The farmers and tour operators have committed to give the Government full support in the construction of the road.
The Platjan border post road which was completed in 2019 remains partially utilised due to unavailability of a connecting road. However, after government review and continued stakeholder engagements, the scope of the Mathathane-Platjan Border Post Road (30km) has been increased to cover 213km through the Letsema Concept.
All key government departments with the necessary equipment will be involved while SPEDU plays a coordination role.
