In her welcome remarks, the Deputy Headteacher, Ms.Olebogeng Ketsetswewang shared the school’s journey since its establishment in 1997. She highlighted Motlhasedi CJSS’s steady growth from six to twelve streams, while also noting the need for three additional classrooms to cater for increasing enrolment. Ms. Ketsetswewang also pointed out challenges such as limited staff housing — with only 16 houses available — and insufficient sanitation facilities, where 432 students share just eight toilets. Despite these hurdles, she encouraged learners to remain focused on excellence and expressed hope for continued development. She thanked all stakeholders for their unwavering support and commitment to the school’s mission.
The SPEDU Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Othata Batsetswe, who served as the Guest Speaker, delivered an inspiring keynote address under the theme “Rising with Purpose: Honouring Excellence in a Time of Change.” He reminded students that true success extends beyond academic results and includes character, leadership, and compassion. Mr. Batsetswe urged learners to study with intention, respect others, and uphold botho as a guiding principle in life.
Reaffirming SPEDU’s dedication to education, Mr. Batsetswe announced a P2,000 contribution towards the event and the donation of two laptops — one each for the best-performing Form 2 and Form 3 students — as well as a tablet for a top Form 1 learner. He further suggested, as a request to the Minister, that given the pressing needs for additional classrooms, staff accommodation, and improved sanitation facilities, next year the funds currently allocated for laptop donations could instead be directed toward addressing these critical areas. He concluded with words of encouragement, quoting Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” He urged everyone to live purposefully, face challenges with courage, and allow education to be the light that guides them to a brighter future.
Another distinguished guest, the Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Honorable Ketlhalefile FC Motshegwa commended the guest speaker for his inspirational message and encouraged students to apply the lessons shared. He urged them to remain focused, work hard, and stay motivated in pursuit of their goals. The Minister emphasized the importance of caring for children, noting that the establishment of the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education reflects government’s commitment to their well-being. Quoting O. Fiamma Yola Aguari, he reminded the audience that, “There is no trust more sacred than the one the world places in its children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their lives are respected, that their well-being is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want, and that they can grow up in peace.
He further emphasized that education is a shared responsibility among government, parents, teachers, and students. Addressing teachers, the Minister highlighted the need to value and protect their morale and welfare, noting that true success stems from motivated people. “Don’t build the organization — build the people, and the people will build the organization,” he said, reinforcing the idea that empowered teachers form the foundation of a successful education system.
The ceremony ended on a high note, filled with appreciation, motivation, and renewed purpose. Motlhasedi JSS continues to shine as a beacon of growth and determination — nurturing learners who rise with purpose and shape a brighter future for the nation.
