Specialist: Environment, Social & Governance (ESG)

 Position Purpose
The Specialist, Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) is responsible for designing, implementing, and institutionalising ESG frameworks across SPEDU’s operations, investment facilitation activities, and supported enterprises within the SPEDU region. The role ensures that environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and sound governance are embedded into project development, enterprise support, investment promotion, and portfolio management, in alignment with national policies and international best practices.

The position plays a critical role in safeguarding SPEDU and the Government of Botswana from environmental, social, governance, and reputational risks, while also enabling access to green finance, climate finance, and ESG-linked investment opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a coherent and credible ESG framework aligned to SPEDU’s mandate and international standards.
  • Minimise environmental risks and promote sustainable, climate-resilient development.
  • Ensure inclusive development outcomes and protect communities and workers.
  • Strengthen governance, integrity, and accountability across SPEDU and its portfolio.
  • Embed ESG into investment decision-making and portfolio management.
  • Track ESG performance and ensure credible reporting.
  • Build ESG capacity within SPEDU and supported enterprises.
  • Ensure ESG risks are systematically identified, mitigated, and reported.
  • Escalate material ESG, environmental, social, or reputational risks to senior management and relevant committees.
  • Maintain compliance with national laws and international ESG standards.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Education: Postgraduate qualification in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Development Studies, Economics, Law, or related field.
  • Experience: 7 years in ESG, environmental and social safeguards, sustainability, or development finance.
  • Technical Competencies: ESG standards, safeguards, climate finance, risk assessment, reporting frameworks.
  • Behavioural Competencies: Integrity, analytical rigor, stakeholder engagement, communication, problem-solving.

SPEDU

SPEDU is a Company wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana, under the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship whose mandate is to facilitate and coordinate economic development projects and regeneration of the SPEDU Region.  

The Company promotes inward investment and trade facilitation in the Region. In particular, SPEDU is currently focusing on investment promotion, and is seeking to promote the establishment and growth of enterprises mainly in Manufacturing, Tourism, Agri-business and other business development initiatives.
